Helping your child grow, learn and thrive—through play.
At SEARHC, we understand that every child’s journey is unique—and so is their path to healing, growth and independence. Pediatric rehabilitation plays a vital role in helping children overcome physical, developmental and communication challenges caused by injury, illness or congenital conditions. Our comprehensive services include:
- Pediatric Physical Therapy to improve strength, mobility and coordination
- Pediatric Occupational Therapy to thrive in everyday tasks by addressing fine motor, executive functioning, feeding and sensory processing
- Pediatric Speech-Language Therapy to support communication and cognitive-linguistic development
Through compassionate, play-based and evidence-based care, our multidisciplinary team empowers children and their families to achieve meaningful milestones and thrive in everyday life.
Our Approach
Guided by the power of play and the importance of a caring and supportive network, pediatric rehabilitation is delivered in sensory-rich environments where children lead the way through play—and families are valued partners in every step of the journey.
- Sensory Environment: Whether sound, touch or sight, everyone’s senses respond differently. For some this can be underwhelming or overwhelming. To take in new information, stay calm, stay focused, ready to learn, play and interact with others, we must understand the patient’s sensory system. We use a sensory-based environment to support your child’s sensory processing, creating a safe space for a child to be successful, in whatever their environment.
- Child-Led Play: Our expert therapists follow your child’s lead, incorporating their interests into therapy sessions to encourage active participation.
- Play-Based Activities: We target your child’s individual developmental goals through play and engagement including cause-and-effect games, turn taking and following directions.
- Family-Centered Care: Parents, grandparents and caregivers play an essential role in therapy. We encourage their involvement to support progress at home.
- Individualized Home Programs: Your therapist can provide customized home and community strategies to reinforce therapy goals in daily life.
By blending child-led play with guided exercises, we create a supportive and effective therapy experience that helps your child thrive.
Family-Centered Care
Family involvement is essential to a child’s success in rehabilitation—when families actively participate in sessions, they help reinforce progress, build confidence and create meaningful connections that support healing and growth beyond the clinic session.
- Parents or caregivers must attend and participate in their child’s sessions.
- Therapists will encourage family members to participate alongside their child, modeling techniques and strategies to later use at home.
Therapy Session Length
Evaluations: Scheduled for 60 minutes, all patient evaluations include completing an intake packet with assessment forms for caregivers to fill out. After the evaluation, you will discuss a treatment plan that meets your child’s individual needs.
Follow-up sessions: Most follow-up sessions are 30-45 minutes in duration. The length of treatment is determined at evaluation and is updated periodically with your therapist. Sessions include:
- Continuous Progress Monitoring: Adjustments are made as needed to better ensure progression and positive outcomes.
- Episodes of Care/Built-In Breaks: Short, intensive sessions are encouraged. For example, sessions may be once or twice a week for 6 to 12 weeks, depending on your child’s needs and therapist’s recommendations. We encourage short therapy breaks to allow children to practice skills in real-world settings, increasing confidence and motivation before engaging in another ‘episode of care’/future sessions.
Some children achieve their goals quickly, while others benefit from ongoing support. Our team will work with you to determine the best approach for your child.
Virtual Therapy Services
Telehealth offers valuable flexibility and helps ensure your child can continue receiving support—no matter where you live. We offer virtual therapy sessions, which may include:
- Guided therapy activities
- Parent education on exercises and strategies
- Progress check-ins and adjustments to home programs
While it’s a great option for families who live farther from our clinics, it’s not the right fit for every child. Whenever possible, we encourage in-person visits to build strong connections, allow for hands-on guidance, and fully support your child’s progress.
Bringing Pediatric Therapy Services to Families Across Southeast Alaska
We recognize that access to in-person therapy services can be a challenge for families in remote communities. To support continued access, SEARHC therapists offer telehealth services across Southeast and travel to various locations for in-person evaluations and therapy sessions. If there is not a pediatric rehabilitation clinic in your area, telehealth services or periodic short, intensive sessions at a SEARHC Rehabilitation Clinic may help serve your child’s and family’s needs.
We are committed to serving all children in Southeast Alaska, regardless of location. Please reach out to your local clinic. To explore telehealth options, please call our Vintage Park Campus location in Juneau at 907.463.0140.
