Advanced Imaging Technology for Comprehensive Care
SEARHC is expanding access to high-quality imaging services with Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technology available at Mt. Edgecumbe Medical Center (MEMC) in Sitka and coming soon in 2025 to our Vintage Park Campus location in Juneau.
Our state-of-the-art MRI equipment provides detailed, high-resolution imaging to support accurate diagnoses and better patient care—closer to home.
Referring a patient? You have options.
SEARHC is pleased to partner with independent physicians in providing diagnostics imaging services to their patients. The SEARHC Imaging Order Guide is designed to help physicians prescribe and order the patient tests and includes indications and recommendations to consider as well as CPT codes.
- Providers without access to SEARHC’s Electronic Medical Record (EMR): Download and complete the Imaging Request Form. Submit the completed form with supporting clinical documentation/records as directed on the form (preferred) or patient can hand carry.
- Providers with access to SEARHC’s EMR: From the EMR, providers may send signed orders. This will include current progress notes, imaging reports, or any other relevant documentation.
What is an MRI?
An MRI is a non-invasive medical imaging technique that uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of the inside of the body. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, MRI does not use radiation, making it a preferred method for imaging soft tissues, organs and joints.
MRI is particularly effective for diagnosing conditions related to:
- Brain and nervous system disorders
- Muscles, ligaments and tendons (e.g., sports injuries)
- Spinal cord and joint issues
- Internal organs, including the heart and liver
How is an MRI Different from a CT Scan?
- MRI is best for soft tissue imaging, such as muscles, ligaments and the brain.
- CT scans are better suited for bone, fractures and certain emergency conditions.
- Both are essential diagnostic tools. Your provider will determine the best option based on your needs.
What to Expect During Your MRI
Getting an MRI is a safe and painless process. Here’s what you can expect:
Check-In & Preparation
- Wear comfortable clothing without metal zippers or snaps.
- Jewelry and metal objects will need to be removed.
- Patients with implants or medical devices should inform staff beforehand. Please bring your implanted device cards for our technologist to review.
The MRI Scan
- You will lie on a cushioned table that slides into the MRI machine.
- The machine will produce noticeable tapping sounds—we provide headphones and music to keep you comfortable.
- The scan usually takes 30-60 minutes, depending on the area being examined.
After the MRI
- Most patients can resume normal activities immediately.
- If contrast dye is used, our team will provide any necessary follow-up instructions.
- Your provider will review the results and discuss the next steps with you.

- Two convenient locations: MRI is available at MEMC (Sitka) and coming soon to Vintage Park Campus (Juneau) in 2025.
Coming Soon to Vintage Park in Juneau
Expanded MRI Access in 2025
SEARHC is excited to bring MRI services to Juneau at Vintage Park Campus in 2025. This new location will provide advanced imaging services for the community, reducing the need to travel to Sitka or Anchorage for MRI scans.
