Bingocize® is an innovative program that combines the traditional game of bingo with simple, evidence-based exercises designed to improve physical fitness, mental health and social connection. In Southeast Alaska, where our diverse communities thrive amidst stunning landscapes, Bingocize offers a unique opportunity to enhance overall wellness and celebrate the power of togetherness. Currently hosted in local senior centers, tribal meeting places; Bingocize programs in Southeast Alaska have already made a meaningful impact on elder health and quality of life.

One of the primary benefits of Bingocize is its ability to support physical fitness in a fun and engaging way. The program incorporates gentle, easy-to-follow exercises into bingo games, which help improve mobility, balance and flexibility. For older adults or those with limited mobility in Southeast Alaska’s communities, these exercises can be a game-changer, reducing the risk of falls and fostering independence. In our more remote communities/regions where access to specialized fitness facilities may be limited, Bingocize provides an accessible and enjoyable way to stay active.

Beyond physical health, Bingocize is an excellent tool for enhancing mental and cognitive well-being. The game’s structure encourages participants to stay mentally alert as they mark their bingo cards, while the social atmosphere fosters laughter and connection. For Southeast Alaska’s elders/seniors, who may face feelings of isolation in remote areas, these activities can significantly reduce stress and improve mood. Participants are given homework between Bingocize classes to encourage intergenerational participation, strengthening bonds within families and communities while reinforcing the value of shared traditions and experiences.

Finally, Bingocize is a cultural fit for Southeast Alaska because it respects and celebrates community values. Activities like this promote gathering and sharing, which are central to many Alaska Native traditions. Local organizations can adapt Bingocize to include culturally relevant themes or health education, including chronic condition prevention like colorectal cancer. By blending physical activity, mental engagement and cultural identity, Bingocize not only benefits individuals but also strengthens the fabric of Southeast Alaska’s communities.

This simple yet effective program is a wonderful way to bring our community together while promoting health, happiness and community spirit across the region. If you are interested in learning more and finding out about opportunities in your community, reach out to communitywellness@searhc.org.
