Fluoroscopic Exams

SEARHC offers specialized fluoroscopic imaging services, providing real-time x–ray visualization for accurate diagnosis and image-guided procedures. Our skilled technologists and radiologists use advanced fluoroscopy equipment to support safe, precise, and minimally invasive care.

Advanced Technology

We are committed to bringing advanced imaging technologies to patients and providers throughout Southeast Alaska.
  • Fluoroscopy uses a continuous or pulsed x-ray beams to capture real-time video of internal organs, joints and tissues.
  • These exams are commonly used to evaluate digestion, joint function, or abnormalities in the esophagus, stomach, intestines and colon.
  • Fluoroscopy also guides the placement of instruments or contrast dye in procedures requiring high precision.
  • SEARHC offers fluoroscopic exams including upper GI series, barium enemas and arthrograms.

What is a Fluoroscopic Exam?

Fluoroscopy is a type of medical imaging that provides a continuous x-ray “movie” of your body in motion. Unlike x-ray images, fluoroscopy lets providers observe dynamic processes (like swallowing, joint movement, or blood flow) in real time.

Fluoroscopy is commonly used for:
  • Examining the digestive tract (e.g., upper GI series or barium swallow)
  • Diagnosing blockages, ulcers or strictures in the esophagus or intestines
  • Visualizing joint spaces during an arthrogram
  • Guiding injections or catheter placements
  • Monitoring contrast flow through body systems

Who Might Need a Fluoroscopic Exam?

Fluoroscopic exams are safe, quick and provide highly detailed insight for both diagnosis and intervention. Your provider may recommend a fluoroscopy exam if you:
  • Have difficulty swallowing or unexplained digestive issues
  • Need assessment of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, or colon
  • Have joint pain or limited mobility that requires evaluation
  • Are scheduled for a contrast-guided procedure
  • Need image-guided placement of medical devices (like catheters)

Accessible, Expert Imaging

SEARHC offers fluoroscopy at multiple locations across Southeast Alaska. Our experienced imaging team follows rigorous safety and imaging protocols to ensure effective care with minimal radiation exposure.

Referring a patient? You have options.

SEARHC is pleased to partner with independent physicians in providing diagnostics imaging services to their patients. The SEARHC Imaging Order Guide is designed to help physicians prescribe and order the patient tests and includes indications and recommendations to consider as well as CPT codes.

Providers without access to SEARHC’s Electronic Medical Record (EMR): Download and complete the Imaging Request Form. Submit the completed form with supporting clinical documentation/records as directed on the form (preferred) or patient can hand carry.

Hand carried orders can be given to their PCP or Imaging team; the ordering provider will need to be credentialed by the MSO and have access before we can enter the order in the system and perform the exam.

Providers with access to SEARHC’s EMR: From the EMR, providers may send signed orders. This will include current progress notes, imaging reports, or any other relevant documentation.
