Echocardiogram (Cardiac Imaging)

SEARHC provides advanced echocardiography services, more commonly referred to as cardiac imaging, offering detailed evaluations of heart function in both routine and urgent care settings. Our trained cardiac sonographers and interpreting cardiologists use the latest ultrasound techniques to help identify heart conditions earlier and guide ongoing treatment with clarity and confidence.

Advanced Technology

We are committed to bringing advanced imaging technologies to patients and providers throughout Southeast Alaska.
  • Cardiac imaging uses high-frequency sound waves to create real-time images of the heart’s structure and movement.
  • Cardiac imaging is vital in diagnosing conditions such as heart failure, congenital heart defects and cardiomyopathy.
  • Cardiac imaging is non-invasive, radiation-free and can be performed bedside or in an outpatient setting, ensuring timely and comfortable care.
  • Our services include 2D echocardiography, Doppler imaging and stress echoes to assess heart wall motion, valve function and blood flow.

What is an Echocardiogram?

An echocardiogram (echo) is an ultrasound-based diagnostic test that creates moving images of the heart. It allows providers to evaluate how the heart beats and pumps blood.

Cardiac imaging can help in:
  • Measuring heart size, shape and muscle thickness
  • Detecting fluid around the heart (pericardial effusion)
  • Evaluating valve function and murmurs
  • Assessing damage after a heart attack
  • Identifying congenital heart defects or cardiomyopathy
  • Monitoring chronic heart conditions and treatment progress

Who Might Need an Echocardiogram?

Your provider may recommend an echocardiogram if you:
  • Experience symptoms like chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue or irregular heartbeat
  • Have a heart murmur or abnormal electrocardiogram (EKG)
  • Are being evaluated for heart valve disease, heart failure or congenital heart issues
  • Are undergoing treatment for cardiac conditions and need regular monitoring
  • Are preparing for or recovering from cardiac surgery
  • Have a family history of heart disease or unexplained fainting episodes

Accessible, Expert Imaging

SEARHC offers echocardiography services at multiple imaging locations across Southeast Alaska. Our team uses high-quality equipment and adheres to national standards of cardiac imaging, ensuring each exam provides accurate, clinically relevant data for your care team.

Referring a patient? You have options.

SEARHC is pleased to partner with independent physicians in providing diagnostics imaging services to their patients. The SEARHC Imaging Order Guide is designed to help physicians prescribe and order the appropriate patient tests. It includes indications, CPT codes, and documentation recommendations.

Providers without access to SEARHC’s Electronic Medical Record (EMR): Download and complete the Imaging Request Form. Submit the completed form with supporting clinical documentation/records as directed on the form (preferred) or patient can hand carry.

Hand carried orders can be given to their PCP or Imaging team; the ordering provider will need to be credentialed by the MSO and have access before we can enter the order in the system and perform the exam.

Providers with access to SEARHC’s EMR: From the EMR, providers may send signed orders. This will include current progress notes, imaging reports, or any other relevant documentation.
