What is a Bone Density Scan (DEXA)?

A bone density scan, also known as a DEXA scan, is a non-invasive test that measures bone mineral content and density. It’s primarily used to detect conditions like osteopenia and osteoporosis, which indicate a higher risk for fractures and bone weakness. This test is especially important for aging adults, postmenopausal individuals and those with risk factors such as long-term steroid use or certain chronic illnesses.

DEXA scans can help:

Identify bone loss before a fracture occurs

Who Might Need a Bone Density Scan?

You may need a bone density test if you:

Are a woman aged 65 or older, or a postmenopausal woman with risk factors
Are a man over age 55, or younger with risk factors This should be age 70, not 55. Have a history of fractures from minor injuries Take medications that affect bone health (like corticosteroids)
Have medical conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or low body weight
Smoke or consume alcohol excessively
Have a family history of osteoporosis

SEARHC is pleased to partner with independent physicians in providing diagnostics imaging services to their patients. The SEARHC Imaging Order Guide is designed to help physicians prescribe and order the patient tests and includes indications and recommendations to consider as well as CPT codes.

Providers without access to SEARHC’s Electronic Medical Record (EMR):

Download and complete the Imaging Request Form. Submit the completed form with supporting clinical documentation/records as directed on the form (preferred) or patient can hand carry.

Hand carried orders can be given to their PCP or Imaging team; the ordering provider will need to be credentialed by the MSO and have access before we can enter the order in the system and perform the exam.
