Obstetric Services
Prenatal Care
Our providers have completed the most stringent training programs in the specialty of obstetrics in additional to meeting the highest standard to achieve board certification allowing our team to provide the most up to date care for even the highest risk pregnancies. Prenatal care is also supported by a certified nurse midwife. Our team strives to ensure that every patient, low or high risk, has a satisfying experience during their pregnancy. Many women have unique requests and ideals that are important to them. We strive to learn a woman’s expectations and desires during her pregnancy and delivery so that we can accommodate those requests allowing new moms to focus on what really matters.
We provide prenatal care to all patients and arrange for our patients with high-risk conditions to deliver at a hospital with more specialized services.
Prenatal Services:
- Amniocentesis (Juneau & Sitka)
- Cervical Cerclage (Sitka)
- Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (offered throughout pregnancy, during labor and postpartum)
Labor and Delivery (Sitka)
When delivering your child at SEARHC Mt. Edgecumbe Medical Center, our team is committed to understanding and respecting your preferences and your personalized birth plan. We recognize that many patients have specific wishes and desires for their delivery experience and we encourage you to discuss these with your healthcare provider. Early discussions help in the development of a birth plan.
There is 24/7 on-call coverage for anesthesia and cesarean delivery (C-section), as well as a full-time, board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist, who may be consulted for high-risk patients or operative deliveries when needed. Board certified physicians are available most of the time for the emergency care of newborns needing special attention. The team of highly trained and experienced staff will do everything possible to make your child and family feel safe and comfortable. Our top priority for each patient is a safe and healthy delivery.
Patient housing is available upon request.

Postnatal Care
After delivery, we encourage a period of bonding and promote breastfeeding as the best choice for feeding newborns. Babies stay with their parents and “skin-to-skin” contact is encouraged immediately after birth and through the initial breastfeeding. All procedures and assessments are completed bedside, allowing parents plenty of time for the closeness that helps promote bonding with their new baby. SEARHC also encourages 24-hour rooming with newborns.
We believe in giving mothers the information, confidence, and skills necessary to successfully initiate and continue breastfeeding their babies. That is why we have a trained team available to assist with breastfeeding. MEMC is also recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a Baby-Friendly Hospital.
