Obstetrics and Gynecology
SEARHC is honored to serve as a trusted health partner for you and your family. Our obstetrics team specializes in caring for expectant mothers and new mothers and their babies.
When delivering your child at SEARHC, our team is committed to understanding and respecting your preferences and your personalized birth plan. We recognize that many patients have specific wishes and desires for their delivery experience and we encourage you to discuss these with your healthcare provider. Early discussions help in the development of a birth plan.
Patient housing is available upon request.

Delivering in Sitka
Our top priority for each patient is a safe and healthy delivery.
Mt. Edgecumbe Medical Center’s OB Department includes the areas of:
- OB triage
- Labor and delivery
- Postpartum
- Repeat C-sections
- OB anesthesia consultations
- 24-hour OB epidural services
There is 24/7 on-call coverage for anesthesia and cesarean delivery (C-section), as well as a full-time, board-certified obstetrician/gynecologist, who may be consulted for high-risk patients or operative deliveries when needed. Board certified pediatricians are available most of the time for the emergency care of newborns needing special attention. The team of highly trained and experienced staff will do everything possible to make your child and family feel safe and comfortable.
Prenatal Care
We provide prenatal care to all patients and arrange for our patients with high-risk conditions to deliver at a hospital with more specialized services.
Postnatal
After delivery, we encourage a period of bonding and promote breastfeeding as the best choice for feeding newborns. Babies stay with their parents and “skin-to-skin” contact is encouraged immediately after birth and through the initial breastfeeding. All procedures and assessments are completed bedside, allowing parents plenty of time for the closeness that helps promote bonding with their new baby. SEARHC also encourages 24-hour rooming with newborns.
We believe in giving mothers the information, confidence, and skills necessary to successfully initiate and continue breastfeeding their babies. That is why we have a trained team available to assist with breastfeeding. MEMC is also recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a Baby-Friendly Hospital.
