WRANGELL, July 10, 2020 – The Wrangell Medical Center (WMC) construction project is currently tracking ahead of schedule, with crews working to advance the project timeline and allow for a potential grand opening ahead of the original April 2021 target date. Progress has gained momentum due to crew size increases, including new trades coming onto the project, and existing trades adding crew members to meet project demands.
“Crews are working diligently to move up the opening date,” said SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) Assistant Director of Facility Services Michael Pountney. “This is an ambitious goal – especially during a worldwide pandemic – but if the current momentum continues, we are hopeful this can be achieved.”
On the interior, metal framing installation is nearing completion in the hospital wing, with drywall crews and painters working closely behind. Mechanical contractors are installing ductwork and sprinkler systems throughout the new construction, while electrical contractors have roughed in three of the hospital’s four quadrants. Work commenced on exterior siding and trim on July 1 with a goal to complete WMC’s shell in September.
“WMC staff and SEARHC leadership are excited to hear that the project is currently ahead of schedule,” said SEARHC Vice President and WMC Hospital Administrator Leatha Merculieff. “Dawson Construction has worked hard to mitigate any delays due to the implementation of COVID-19 travel mandates. Our staff is looking forward to providing high-quality healthcare in a new, state-of-the-art facility.”
Renovation of the AICS Clinic recently entered Phase 2, which focuses on the registration area re-design, elevator installation, and construction of second-level office space for WMC staff. Many of these tasks required night crews, as noise from demolition and excavation would disrupt clinic operations. Clinic patients are currently accessing providers through a rear entrance and utilizing a temporary registration and waiting room.
Concrete projects – including equipment pads, elevator pit, and sidewalks – are scheduled to begin mid-July. Installation of access controls and security systems will start in mid-August.
