Hoonah, population 800, is located on Chichagof Island, and is the largest Native Tlingit community in Alaska.

Hoonah offers outstanding opportunities for learning about Native Tlingit culture and enjoying world-class foods. For an adventure, you can visit the largest population of brown bears on earth, speed down the longest zipline in North America, or enjoy the company of humpback whales.

Hoonah is an ideal destination for any hunter or angler due to the abundance of salmon, halibut, trout, and deer.

Although small, Hoonah offers a full suite of retail services from grocery and hardware store to artisan shops. All five kinds of Pacific salmon can be found in Hoonah as well as other seafood, including halibut, shrimp and crabs.

How to Get Around

Air:

Small plane airlines travel regularly to Hoonah from other Southeast Alaskan communities including Sitka and Juneau. Many also offer charter flights.

Road:

Most of Hoonah’s amenities are within walking distance from the town center. If you would like to take advantage of over 150 miles of logging roads to see the surrounding landscape, car rental services are available. You can bring your personal vehicle by traveling to Hoonah via the Alaska Marine Highway ferry.

Water:

Alaska Marine Highway System offers regular scheduled ferry service, passenger cabins and vehicle transport between select communities in Alaska, Canada and Washington. You can also rent a small boat if you would like to access more of the surrounding waters, beautiful bays and islands around Hoonah.
