SEARHC WISEWOMAN and Body IQ Physical Therapy and Yoga team up for women’s heart health

HAINES – While most people associate the heart with feelings of love during the month of February, the SEARHC WISEWOMAN program and Body IQ Physical Therapy and Yoga want to remind women that each of their hearts is an incredible machine that works hard for them 24 hours a day. Of course, like any machine, hearts need proper fuel, tune-ups, and maintenance to run smoothly.

Friday, February 3, is “Wear Red Day” which aims at raising awareness and promoting heart health for women. To celebrate, WISEWOMAN is partnering for a First Friday event at Body IQ Physical Therapy and Yoga with great artwork and refreshments. Stop into Body IQ between 5-7 PM on Friday, February 3, and set your goal for a two-week challenge and return on February 17, at 5 PM to talk about your success. Everyone is also encouraged to wear red to support women’s heart health.

More women die from heart disease and stroke than any other cause in Alaska. Heart problems are typically not felt until middle age or later, but the choices made throughout the lifespan affect the heart. The risk for heart problems is much higher for those who use tobacco or electronic nicotine delivery devices. Poor nutrition, stress, and lack of exercise play significant roles in heart health as well.

SEARHC WISEWOMAN offers free women’s health screenings for any woman age 30-64 who qualifies by income. These screenings include a women’s health visit with a medical provider, Pap smear, mammogram for those 40 and older, and a heart health check-up. To schedule an appointment or to learn more about the WISEWOMAN program, please call Pam Sloper at 766-6367.
