SEARHC brings mobile mammography back to Southeast later this summer

SITKA – For the second time this summer, the SouthEast Regional Health Consortium WISEWOMAN Women’s Health Program is making digital mammography services available to women in several Southeast Alaskan communities.

The mobile mammography van will visit the Alicia Roberts Medical Center in Klawock Saturday, July 30, and Monday, August 1 – Thursday, August 4; Hydaburg Alma Cook Health Center on  Friday, August 5; the Hoonah Health Center Wednesday, August 10 – Friday, August 13; Dahl Memorial Clinic in Skagway Tuesday, August 16 – Friday, August 19; and the Haines Health CenterSaturday, August 20, & Monday, August 22 – Wednesday, August 24.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death (after lung cancer) among Alaskan women. Early detection through regular screening increases the chances of long-term survival. Mobile mammography allows greater accessibility for women that would otherwise have to travel to receive a breast cancer screening, increasing the likelihood of early intervention.

“We are delighted and proud to be able to offer the latest digital technology to our patients. Women are encouraged to take advantage of the convenience and cost savings that come with the elimination of travel for this important screening. We also strongly encourage women to contact their local clinic to schedule a women’s health exam with their provider at the same time,” said Pam Sloper, SEARHC WISEWOMAN Women’s Health RN. She added, “This is an excellent opportunity to address all of your health concerns and discuss what additional health screenings are right for you.”

The mobile mammography program is made possible through SEARHC WISEWOMAN Women’s Health Program’s partnership with the Breast Cancer Detection Center. The SEARHC WISEWOMAN Women’s Health Program provides free clinical breast exams, Pap tests, and cardiovascular screenings for all women ages 30 to 64, and mammograms for women age 40-64 who meet specific income and insurance guidelines.
