At SEARHC, we are excited to further our commitment to providing high-quality healthcare throughout Southeast Alaska. That is why we are making significant changes to the way you access care. We are proud to announce that we are broadening our services and advancing medical access in Wrangell, Juneau and Sitka. Follow along in our journey by visiting this site occasionally.
SEARHC will be upgrading Mt. Edgecumbe Medical Center (MEMC), a critical access Hospital and other Health Service buildings in Sitka Alaska, to a state-of-the-art healthcare facility with expanded services to meet the demand of local and referred patients across Southeast Alaska. This expansion will reinforce SEARHC’s commitment to delivering high-quality care across the region.
“The health of our patients and community is vital, and by building a comprehensive campus, expanded services will be available to respond to their changing healthcare needs.”
The project, designed by Wold Architects & Engineers and awarded to Dawson Construction, created a 44,500 square foot joint healthcare campus in Wrangell. The facility integrated on-site Primary Care services with Critical Access Hospital services, ancillary support services, and Long-Term Care. The groundbreaking ceremony was held on May 30, 2019, and the first patients were seen in the Emergency Department and Acute Care on February 12, 2021. Long-Term Care residents moved to the new facility on Sunday, February 14, 2021.
“SEARHC has been steadily pushing forward to meet the healthcare needs of the Wrangell community.”
— Charles Clement,
President and Chief Executive Officer
SEARHC is completing a multi-phase renovation of the Ethel Lund Medical Center (ELMC). No less than nine (9) service areas were involved in the construction project. Thanks to the flexibility and patience of ELMC staff, all services have managed to remain open during the renovation. The model reached 99% completion on January, 31, 2021, with remaining projects pending the arrival of materials.
“Starting construction is a significant milestone in the journey towards a sustainable health system and mirrors SEARHC’s goals of partnering with our communities to provide the best healthcare services possible.”

President and Chief Executive Officer
