November 19 2009SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) Chief Operating Officer (COO) Frank Sutton has been awarded the Senior-Level Healthcare Executive Regent’s Award from the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE), the nation’s leading professional society for healthcare leaders. Sutton received the award during the Alaska State Hospital and Nursing Home Association annual meeting in September in Soldotna. Each year the ACHE Regent for Alaska honors outstanding members of the health care community for their contributions and achievements. There are nine criteria for the Senior-Level Healthcare Executive Regent’s Award: • A Fellow of ACHE, • A CEO, COO or other senior-level executive title within his/her organization, • Demonstration of leadership ability, • Demonstration of innovative and creative management, • Executive capability in developing his/her organization and promoting its growth and stature in the community, • Contributions to the development of others in the health care profession, • Demonstration of leadership in local, state or provincial hospital and health association activities, • Participation in civic/community activities and projects, and • Demonstration of participation in ACHE activities and interest in assisting ACHE in achieving its objectives. “How is this person described? Quiet and humble are two words, but even more prominent are descriptions such as mentor, leader and role model,” ACHE Regent for Alaska Michelle Calvin-Casey said when she presented the award to Sutton. “More than once, this person was credited with growing and developing the people around him, encouraging and believing in their skills and abilities.” “I feel very honored to be recognized by Michelle to receive the Regent’s Award,” Sutton said. “Much of my career has been about mentoring other people, and I am pleased the regent felt this was worthy of recognition.” Sutton has been with SEARHC since 1971, when he arrived at Sitka’s Mt. Edgecumbe Hospital as a pharmacist. Sutton became Director of Hospital Services in 1978 and in 1999 was promoted to Vice President of Hospital Services. Sutton became SEARHC’s Chief Operating Officer in October. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy from Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, Okla., and a Master of Science degree in health care administration from Trinity University of San Antonio, Texas. Sutton is a retired Captain in the U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, with 28 years as an officer in the USPHS. He became a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives in 2006.
