Update for Week ending
September 26, 2009

Hoonah Community Presentation. On Wednesday night, SEARHC joined the Hoonah Indian Association (HIA) and the Indian Health Service (IHS) in presenting a 4-year operational plan for the health center in Hoonah. Between 50 and 60 community members were present. We provided community members with a flyer on the operational plan. Mr. Jim Armbrust with the Alaska Area Native Health Service (Alaska Area IHS) was also in Hoonah for the community meeting. Community members asked questions about the transition, services in Hoonah, and ideas about future services. The community flyer can be seen at http://www.searhc.org/downloads/HoonahFourYearPlan.pdf.

Alaska Native Health Status Report. This week we received a copy of the Alaska Native Health Status Report from the Epicenter at the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium (ANTHC). This data is informative as it describes causes of death and illness among Alaska Natives. The booklet also describes the frequency of disease, and health status as well as economic conditions across our state. The document is an essential companion for a data-driven health organization focusing on improving care for our people. The Alaska Native Health Status Report is online at http://www.anthc.org/chs/epicenter/pubs.cfm.

Great work going on in Klawock! There was a recent article about partnership between the Southeast Senior Services, Tlingít and Haida Regional Housing Authority, Rasmuson Foundation, Denali Commission, Klawock Cooperative Association, Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Alaska Housing Finance Corporation and SEARHC on the Klawock Senior Center. The article can be found at http://www.sitnews.us/0909news/090809/090809_klawock.html.

Haines Health Center selected as Business of the Year. We received notice this week that the Haines Chamber of Commerce selected our Haines Health Center as business of the year. Our clinic was selected for their excellent performance and customer service. Several members of the chamber selected SEARHC due to the care we provide and the consistent service to the community and visitors. Congratulations to our staff for service excellence in the community and receiving recognition by business and community leaders! We will officially receive the recognition at a community banquet on October 10th.

Physical Therapy in Hydaburg. In October, Dan Weaver will be increasing his visits to Hydaburg to twice a month. Referrals have increased and he is able to adjust his schedule at the Alicia Roberts Medical Center (ARMC) to accommodate an extra day.

Kake Visit. Dr. Matthew Allen accompanied Dr. Valerie Edwards to Kake during her field visit trip the week of September 14th. Dr. Allen is a third year resident from the United Family Practice Residency in St. Paul, Minnesota, and will be spending about six weeks working with SEARHC in Southeast Alaska. He was greatly impressed by the hospitality of the Kake citizens, and especially enjoyed a dinner featuring Alaska Native foods on Thursday night.

Senior Fall Prevention Week. Governor Parnell proclaimed that September 21 – 27 would be Senior Fall Prevention Week to encourage all citizens to help reduce the number of injuries resulting from falls by elders. The Governor says that “communities can help reduce risk factors for our elderly by keeping sidewalks free of snow and ice, and by offering education, home modification, and exercise programs to improve the strength and balance of Alaska’s seniors.”

Just a reminder. . . SEARHC frequently brings in traveling medical specialists to hold specialty clinics at our various facilities. Please click here to view our upcoming specialty clinic schedules.
