Update for Week ending
April 18, 2009
- Tribal Assembly (CCTHITA). On Friday, we made our annual presentation to the Tribal Assembly of the Central Council of the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska (CCTHITA). Our presentation focused on current facility improvements, challenges in federal funding, systems transformation, innovations in planned care, and Native recruitment. We received feedback from the floor on services, the naming of the Jessie Norma Jim Health Center, and concerns on employment.
- Haines FESC to Receive Denali Commission Funds. The Haines Health Center has been conditionally approved to participate in the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services Frontier Extended Stay Clinic (FESC) demonstration project. FESC standards were written after the facility was renovated, so physical improvements are needed to bring the FESC unit into compliance and allow full participation in the demonstration project. Specific improvements include a one-hour fire-rated barrier and an emergency generator. Design and construction are fully funded by the Denali Commission and HRSA. Design work is currently in process and construction will follow after a competitive bid process. Construction is scheduled for completion by August 31, 2009.
- Governor Proclaims Health Aide Week. The Governor proclaimed this upcoming week Community Health Aide/Practitioner, Dental Health Aide, and Behavioral Health Aide Week. In her proclamation, the Governor recognized the important contributions and dedication of our staff. Congratulations to our staff on this honor.
- Job Shadowing in Juneau-Douglas. Our new Area Health Education Center (AHEC) worked with the Juneau schools for job shadowing at the Ethel Lund Medical Center (ELMC). The ELMC staff stepped up to the plate on the job shadowing requests from the JDHS health sciences students. Job shadows were sought in seven different departments at ELMC. Every department requested by a student responded positively. Our efforts to strengthen our health care workforce are off to a good start in Juneau.
- Alaska Marine Highway Visit. The Alaska Marine Highway System is conducting meetings across Southeast Alaska to discuss concepts for the new Alaska class ferry that is in design. AMHS staff and Elliott Bay Designs invited input from management on our perspectives as well. We provided feedback on patient accessibility, on-board amenities and convenience. We also provided information about our use of telehealth and how some aspects may be helpful during longer trips. We appreciate the AMHS seeking out our input during the concept phase of their design.
