Sitka –  Today, the SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC) proposed to the Sitka Assembly (Assembly) that SEARHC lease the Sitka Community Hospital (SCH) facility and acquire all of its operating assets and operations to create a sustainable healthcare delivery system for Sitka.

“As community and healthcare leaders in Sitka, we are at a decision point regarding healthcare delivery,” said President and Chief Executive Officer Charles Clement. “With Alaska facing serious fiscal challenges and the 2018 state budget cuts to Medicaid reimbursement, two stand-alone hospitals pose unnecessary risk and uncertainty. When: Friday, June 16 from 8:30 am – 4:30 pm.
Where: The free event will be at the Public Health office, located at 210 Moller Avenue next to Moller Park.

SEARHC Outreach & Enrollment staff will be on site to answer questions related to health coverage and can assist people applying for insurance including Medicaid, the Health Insurance Marketplace, Medicare, and veteran’s benefits.

On May 22, the new and expanded Children’s Dental Clinic in the SEARHC dental building in Juneau will begin seeing patients. The expansion has been in the planning stages since 2014 and was the logical next step in providing all children in the community, many of whom are recipients of Denali Kid Care, with access to dental care. With more space and more dentists, SEARHC can care for the oral health of more children in Juneau. Read more

JUNEAU – For safety’s sake, gauges on all pressure canners should be tested at least once a year to ensure proper pressure during the canning process. Jars not cooked at the recommended pressure may allow bacteria called Clostridium botulinum to survive and grow inside a sealed jar of food producing a poisonous toxin. Even a small taste of food containing this toxin can be fatal. One way to prevent food spoilage is to make certain that the gauge of the pressure canner is accurate when home canning.
